Demolition of the old Municipal Garage, located next to the existing City Hall, is substantially complete. This milestone paves the way for the construction of the new 7-Story, 170,000 SF Huntsville City Hall. The project will also feature a 568-space parking garage.
Located in the heart of Downtown Huntsville, the new city Hall is situated between the Madison County Courthouse & Children’s Museum. It is also directly across from the existing City Hall building on 308 Fountain Circle SW.
The Huntsville City Council voted to authorize the study back in July 2017. It was included as part of the recently approved Downtown Master Plan according to the Huntsville government’s City Blog.
The Huntsville City Administrator presented the schematic plans for the new city hall back in December 2019. The existing city hall required constant maintenance and had a price tag of more than $35 Million to renovate. Moreover, the maintenance costs were exponential as city services are spread across multiple leased facilities. The existing building also didn’t meet current building standards.
The city solicited the design services of Goodwyn Mills Caywood (GMC) for the schematic design & program. The initial study resulted in a more contemporary structure which evolved through the public engagement phase.
In November of 2020, the design evolved into a design that “Pays homage to Downtown’s historic structures” according to the Huntsville City Blog. In September of 2021, the Planning Commission gave unanimous support to the site plan. Here’s the Development Rundown:
Huntsville City Hall
- What’s Now: Municipal Parking Garage
- What’s Next: New City Hall
- Owner: City Of Huntsville
- Location: 304 Fountain Circle Drive
- Architect: GMC
- Contractor: Turner Construction

The new design of the Huntsville City Hall is centered around a public-focused approach. GMC is working to streamline services and the customer experience by grouping similar projects together. Building materials are well thought out and will provide a facility which is sustainable, durable, and one that Huntsville can be proud of.
Here is a look at construction progress of the new City Hall as of March 2022.
