Construction of the new I-65 interchange at exit 56 is underway in Spring Hill. The project has been fully funded by the City of Spring Hill with the help of a $25 Million BUILD grant from the federal government. In addition to the new interchange, it also entails an estimated 2.25-mile extension of Buckner Road. Once completed, Buckner Road will be re-named June Lake Boulevard between Buckner Lane and Lewisburg Pike in Williamson County.
The Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT) is managing the design-build project and selected Nashville-based BELL Construction as the general contractor.
“In addition to much needed traffic congestion relief, the new interchange will literally pave the way for greater economic development in Spring Hill, southern Williamson County and northern Maury County,” said Southeast Venture Project Manager Don Alexander. “I’m excited to watch June Lake® take shape as a thriving residential and commercial district in our community.”
According to the release, the new exit will provide direct access from I-65 to Spring Hill and alleviate the traffic congestion along the major north-south corridors throughout the area.
The new interchange could see an estimated 17,000 daily trips in its first year given current demand, and that number is predicted to increase to 44,000 over the next 20 years, according to a regional traffic study conducted by KCI Technologies.
The study was initiated by Southeast Venture, who is master-planning June Lake®, a 775-acre mixed-use development along the west side of I-65 and the new interchange. The findings of the study confirmed what Spring Hill residents already knew: that a new interchange is necessary at this location.
Over the next 20+ years, June Lake® is slated to comprise over 2,900 residential units, 3.9 million square feet of Class A office space, nearly 1.3 million square feet of retail and restaurant space and 400 hotel rooms. That’s over $2.4 billion in construction value, per Cumming Construction Management’s assessment of top regional projects in 2020.
