City geography

city

Nashville is a city in the south of the United States, the capital of the state of Tennessee, the center of Davidson County. It is located on the banks of the Cumberland River in the central part of the state. The city is a major center of health care and education, an important transportation hub, as well as the capital of the country music style, due to which it received the nickname “Music City”.

Administratively, Nashville is united with Davidson County. Meanwhile, the population of the combined county was 691,243 as of the 2017 estimate. The county ranks first in the state of Tennessee in terms of population. It is the largest city in the state by area.

The Nashville agglomeration tends to grow rapidly through a process of intense suburbanization, increasing numbers of satellite cities to the south, and especially to the east and northeast, gradually approaching Kentucky’s borders. The Cumberland River is accessible to small boats, having been used for navigation since the 19th century.

Climate

Nashville is located in a subtropical oceanic climate zone, with hot and rainy summers, cool and wet winters, and mild spring and fall typical of these areas.

The city is occasionally affected by tornadoes, but they rarely cause serious damage.

Economy

Unlike most state capitals, Nashville’s economy relies primarily on the private sector. Banking and insurance business, production of construction materials, engineering and food industry are developed in the city. Due to the location of the governing bodies of such Protestant movements as the Southern Baptist Convention, the United Methodist Church, the National Baptist Convention and several others, Nashville is the largest publishing center of Protestant religious literature in the United States.

“The Capital of Country,” Nashville ranks first in the U.S. in recorded music programs. This business generates over $3.5 billion dollars a year for the city.

Education and health care, as well as the public administration sector, play an important role in the city’s economy.
